Emanuel Scholarship

Dr. Joe and Zoe Emanuel ScholarshipDr. Joe Emanuel, and his wife, Zoe, had a long, dedicated, faithful career and life in serving God. Dr. Joe was an ordained elder in the New Mexico Annual Conference from 1933 to 1975. He and Zoe pastored United Methodist churches in Roy, NM; Gardner, TX; Kermit, TX; Lordsburg, NM; El Paso, TX; Monahans, TX; Las Cruces, NM; Carlsbad, NM; Albuquerque, NM; Artesia, NM; Lovington, NM; and Gallup, NM. Upon his retirement, Dr. Joe came to Alamogordo, NM and the Emanuels began to serve Grace MC as Minister of Visitation.

Throughout his ministry, Dr. Joe did his best to establish “connections” between God and his people. Some of his connections were through Church choir; children’s Sunday school, “little crosses” of faith, and/or helping those with a need – physical or financial. Dr. Joe felt education was very important. He believed that developing skills and knowledge would allow people to realize their full potential; God wants the best for each of us! For this reason, Dr. Joe and Zoe created the scholarship fund.

Jennifer E. Tarnow Scholarship

Jennifer Elizabeth Tarnow (J.E.T.) Memorial Scholarship – Single scholarship of $150.00.

Jennifer Tarnow was a student at Alamogordo High School. She had Cystic Fibrosis. She didn’t let her aliment keep her from excelling in school or from participating in activities such as orchestra and Future Homemakers Association. She participated in the community with Habitat for Humanity and Teens Leading the Community. Jennifer had set two goals herself. First, to graduate from Alamogordo High Scholl and second, to attend college. Jennifer almost made it to graduation; she died in the spring of her senior year of high school. Dorothy Engle, Jennifer’s mother, was able to make one of Jennifer’s goals come true. Dorothy was allowed to attend graduation, walk the line with the graduating class of 2000, and receive Jennifer’s high school diploma. The family created this scholarship so other Alamogordo High School students would have a chance to fulfill their dreams of higher education.

To qualify for this scholarship, an applicant must be a senior at Alamogordo High School, have a 2.50 GPA (on a 4.00 scale), and plan to attend an accredited school in the fall semester of 2024. Applications are available on this page and at Alamogordo High School in the Guidance Department. The 2024 application must be submitted on or before March 21, 2024 by 4:00 PM.

Kiel Bonnell Scholarship

Kiel Bonnell Scholarship – It is a memorial scholarship named for a young man, Kiel Bonnell who died at age 18 in a plane crash. When his family had recovered his personal items, they found in his wallet a piece of paper on which Kiel had written down his two favorite scriptures. But the greatest of these is love.” 1 Corinthians 13:13, “They shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” Isaiah 40:31

His family decided to use the funds they were saving for Kiel’s college education to create this scholarship.

This scholarship is for any high school senior or current college student who is a member of or attends Grace Methodist Church or other area churches. The 2024 application must be submitted on or before March 21, 2024 by 4:00 PM.

Michael J Elliott Mechanical Engineering Scholarship

Michael J Elliott Mechanical Engineering Scholarship Fund – The scholarship has been set up to celebrate the life of Michael J Elliott and his hope for the future. Michael was an auto mechanic and enjoyed building and repairing vintage cars and trucks. He was adept at forging new parts to place old ones. He would find new ways to make things work better. At one time he hoped to earn a degree in mechanical engineering, but finances at the time prevented it from happening.

Michael moved to Alamogordo in 1956. He attended elementary school, junior high and high school here. He graduated from high school in 1959. He was unable to finish college due to the Vietnam War. He joined the Navy in 1970. He served in the Navy for 20 years.

Life continued and new dreams took the place of old ones. Now we would like to see this scholarship help young students achieve their own dreams. Anyone who wishes to donate to this scholarship may do so by donating to Grace UMC Endowment and allocating the funds to the Michael J Elliott Mechanical Engineering Scholarship Fund. Thank you for helping to make dreams come true. The 2024 application must be submitted on or before March 21, 2024 by 4:00 PM.
